FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q1 What is Career Coaching?

A Career coaching offers the chance to work with a career professional on a wide variety of career issues. This can help to clarify how you want your career to develop and provide an opportunity to identify and discuss some potential career options. It may involve a single coaching session, or meeting up over a number of weeks. It is also possible to do some career coaching by telephone and email if this would be more convenient.

Q2 Are there different types of Career Coaching?

A Yes, there are some different types and Career Coaching can also be called things like Career Counselling, or Career Guidance. Some career coaches, for example, may only focus on current issues in your career, whilst other look more widely at your career history and life as a whole. Some coaches also specialise in working with particular client groups such as women returners, or senior executives. It is therefore important to find the right career coach for your own particular career needs.

Q3 What type of Career Coaching approach do you use?

A I am both qualified and experienced in using a number of different career coaching and counselling approaches. This is one of the reasons that I offer a free initial consultation as it enables me to think about and discuss with you the career coaching approach which you may find most helpful.

If you just need a CV or some interview coaching for an urgent job application, for example, then that is what we will focus on doing. But if you are trying to establish a better work/life balance, find a new career, cope with a stressful job, or are facing redundancy - then we may take some more time to reflect on and talk about your career issues. So we may spend a number of sessions looking at your career history, exploring your work and life priorities, and then discussing your career options.

I may sometimes ask you do some short career exercises between coaching sessions and, where appropriate, we will draw up a career action plan for you at the end of the career coaching process.

Q4 How many career coaching sessions will I need?

This will very much depend on the career issues that you may have. I work with some clients for just a single one-hour session, but usually we meet over a number of weeks for up to 6 sessions. You do not have to book or pay for a programme of sessions in advance. So if you wish you can book sessions one-by-one and pay as you go along. Other clients prefer to get a series of dates booked into the diary and this can work well if you want a session on a particular day and at a regular time.

Q5 How much will career coaching cost?

The initial telephone consultation of up to 30 minutes is free of charge. I then charge between £50 - £150 per hour for private clients. This depends on income and whether an employer is supporting your career coaching. There are no hidden costs and these charges include a written copy of a career action plan where appropriate. I will always try to tailor a career coaching package to work within individual budgets.

Q6 Do you travel to visit clients?

A  At the moment I still continue to work mostly online with clients via Zoom or MS Teams. However, I will consider travel out to company locations. It will then be necessary to charge for my travel costs and time beyond the Colchester area where I am based.
